Relaunchization Thing

Okay...this blog actually has a title and some real content now. What what!!

So, I begin by talking about...Sports.
The Hart Trophy.
Who should win it?
Who cares?
The fact is, people are going to dispute it; it's not a no-brainer. And when do people use trophies as a measure of people's talent or prowess? In my opinion, they shouldn't. No matter who wins it, it's still relative. Consider this: If Mike Bossy is around today, he wins every year, chances are. But because of the great players that were around when he was an outstanding player, he got very unlucky and didn't win the Hart. But there's no one who's outstanding, a Mike Bossy caliber player right now, or at least someone who plays with his style. And that's where things get hazy. Because Crosby, Ovechkin, and Sedin all have ridiculously different styles and you really can't pinpoint who had the best year. So I'm going to say, who wins? Who brought out the best in his team? Isn't that what an MVP award really is?
Is that a measurable statistic?
...not really.
Okay, the only guy I actually saw play live this year was Crosby, so I can have a better idea about him than Sedin or Ovechkin. And Crosby didn't impress me a lot. He'd already scored by the time I'd gotten to the game, and it seemed to me he slacked off afterwards and wasn't much of an impact player. The thing that's good about the Penguins as a team is that they're a team. And no one is indispensible. There wasn't much difference in the way they played or the levels of what they could do, line-to-line. They were solid; Crosby actually wasn't on the ice that often, especially for a captain. And as a captain? Well, he was somewhat tentative when standing up for his linemate Chris Kunitz. So I'd say he isn't overly important to his team. Or at least in that game he wasn't. As for the other 81? I don't know. But watching the tape of another game, the most valuable Penguin? Gologoski, Johnson, and Kennedy made their cases.
Ovechkin, on the other hand, was blatantly obvious. He became captain and led his team to a ridiculous winning streak while barely scoring for a month. That's tough to do, but he, like Mike Richards, must be a "motivational" type captain. Which doesn't diminish his value; in fact it makes it higher. But wait, am I contradicting myself here? Not exactly. Ovechkin played hard and made his case for most valuable by helping his teammates. Those games where Crosby was ineffective? The Penguins lost pretty damn decisively. On the other hand, that just makes his individual performance more valuable to the team, doesn't it? I could go around in circles with this so shutting up now.
Sedin? Hot damn, all those assists!!! When someone has a ridiculously high number of anything like that, it's impressive. And points are the ultimate team-helper. It's rare to win without scoring, not impossible because shootout goals do not count as points (I don't think) so Art Ross winners should immediately get some amount of the vote. Although last year's winner ended up by far in second place, well...this isn't about who will win, because I have no idea. But back to Sedin: he assumed more of a leading role on his team, like Ovechkin, and he proved he could play without his brother, unlike Ovechkin, whose brother does not play professional hockey. Even though Sedin and his brother are a dynamic, telekinetic duo together, they can be dynamic all by themselves, too. And consider this: Sedin wasn't in the top 27 last year and is a finalist this year. This ain't about your entire career, just your year, and it might be wise to give it to Sedin as he's probably on the tail end of the "athletic prime" and may not come close to the Art Ross again. On the other hand, he already won it. Does he need another award?
Again, running in circles. Does it matter? Will this year be remembered as "the year so-and-so won the award"? Unless Ovechkin wins it, or doesn't and goes on to win it for a buncha years in a row afterwards, and he wins 9 Harts in 10 years or something, and this is the year Sedin or Crosby won it. Whatever.
That said, Ovechkin's plus/minus is three times Crosby's and 10 higher than Sedin's. Their point totals are comparable, they were all designated to wear letters, they all were very valuable to their teams, so let's be fair. Two guys who deserve the award won't get it.
